Upcoming Seminars and Speakers

One of the most important aspects of Ho-onko is the viewing of the Goeiden (the illustrative scrolls depicting Shinran Shonin’s life), and the reciting of the Godensho (the biography of Shinran Shonin written by Kakunyo Shonin). While not often heard in the United States, these two corresponding features are central to our Jodo Shinshu tradition.

Join Rev. Tadao Koyama as he shares his experience of Ho-onko, and explains the various panels of the Goeiden scroll as well as hear a sample from the Godensho as it is traditionally read at Hongwanji.

Learn how to chant Shōshinge and its meaning with Rev. Kusunoki over Zoom!

In the 15th century, Rennyo Shōnin adopted the chanting of Shōshinge as a daily practice for Jodo Shinshu followers. This replaced other complicated chants and rituals, and provided everyday people with a Buddhist practice that they could incorporate into their lives. Even though the chanting of Shōshinge is not a daily practice for many Jodo Shinshu followers these days, it is still one of the most important texts in Shin Buddhism. Let’s learn Shōshinge together!
