March 15, 11am–1pm
Learn how the Nembutsu became an object of worship in medieval Shin Buddhism. Why was language seen as a more attractive sacred object than a statue? Dr. Blum will discuss the history of a movement in the 14th and 15th centuries to replace a statue of Amida on the temple altar with a painting of Nenbutsu configured to look like Amida with two bodhisattvas.
Event is free and open to the public, donations are graciously accepted.
