D. T. Suzuki, A Buddhist for the Modern World: His Reflections on Pure Land Buddhism
Daisetz Teitarō Suzuki, who popularized Zen worldwide, also had a long and deep tie to Pure Land Buddhism, particularly to Jōdo Shinshū. The first half of the seminar will be an overview of Suzuki’s life and his role as a bridge figure between Japan and the West. The second half examines the teachings of Pure Land Buddhism specifically and the various ways they could be understood based on Suzuki’s thought. Suzuki’s great contribution was to infuse Pure Land thinking with a modern awareness, helping make it a living religion today.
