September study group to attend White River seminar

In September, the Seattle Buddhist Temple study group has chosen to attend the “Body and Mind Seminar” at White River Buddhist Temple. Details are below.

Are you looking for peace and harmony of body & mind?  In this session, we are combining Rev. Dr. Mark Unno’s Dharma Talks with elements from our March Body and Mind Seminar.  We plan to have more movements in the Qi-Gong & Tai Chi session and an adjusted sound system included with this seminar. Wear comfortable clothes that allow free movement and bring a mat or rug or towel to these interactive classes.

10:45 Dr. Mark Unno – Path of Oneness and Great Compassion, Part I – Through times good and bad, joy and suffering, we seek our center and a deeper sense of significance.  Through the Shin Buddhist path of oneness, we discover that the very challenges and suffering we endure become portals to our liberation through the realization of great compassion.  Drawing broadly on insights from diverse spiritual traditions, this Shin path becomes illuminated as a universal path open to all.

INSTRUCTORS

Rev. Dr. Mark Unno is Department Head of Religious Studies, University of Oregon.  He is the author of Shingon Refractions: Myoe and the Mantra of Light (2004), is editor of Buddhism and Psychotherapy Across Cultures (2006), and is the author of various articles on Pure Land Buddhism, comparative religion, and Buddhism and psychology.  He is an ordained minister in the Shin Buddhist tradition and works with Buddhist groups, general audiences, as well as with students and scholars.  He resides in Eugene, Oregon with his wife Megumi and his two cats Onyx and Taata.

Tai Chi Master Mitsuo Aoki has worked as an industrial designer in Japan and also studied Tai Chi for ten years.  He taught Tai Chi for many years in Asia.  After moving to America, Master Aoki has been teaching and studying further in the state of Washington since 1992.  He also taught at Boeing in Bellevue, 1996 to 2007, and is currently teaching at the Parks and Recreation Department in Bellevue and at Samena Swim & Recreation Club.  Master Aoki speaks Japanese, Chinese and English.

Rev. Koshin Ogui was born in Japan in1940 and came to America as a BCA Minister in 1962.  He was assigned to Los Angeles Betsuin Buddhist Temple, BCA Headquarters in San Francisco, Oxnard and Santa Barbara Buddhist Temples.  Rev. Ogui studied at Yale University Divinity School, worked at New York Buddhist Temple, then at Buddhist Church of San Francisco in 1970, Cleveland Buddhist Temple in Ohio, and Midwest Buddhist Temple in Chicago, Ill.  In 1992, Rev. Ogui was elected as Bishop of Buddhist Churches of America for two terms, eight years, April 2004 – March 2012, and is now at White River Buddhist Temple as a Retired Full-Time Resident Minister since May 2012.
