Moments in Buddhist Music

Mark your calendars for the Seattle Buddhist Temple’s annual spring seminar, “Moments in Buddhist Music: Explorations in Sound and Dharma,” which will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge, resident minister of the Buddhist Church of Oakland, is the main presenter. Guests panelists are Dii Lewis, Berkeley Buddhist Temple; Donna Sasaki and Michiko Yukawa, Tacoma Buddhist Temple.

“Exploring Our Nikkei Heritage”

9:30 am – 3:00 pm

Activities Include: Daily Buddhist Service, Japanese Language intro, Taiko Drumming, Japanese songs, Martial Arts, Japanese Cooking, Crafts, Games, Japanese American “Nikkei” culture, Visit to Keiro nursing home and Student Performances on Friday afternoon

Open to all children entering 1^st-8^th grade in Fall 2012
Registration begins February 26, 2012 for temple and BCA members
March 11 is Open Registration for all.
Parents/guardians are encouraged to volunteer.
Class size is limited to 15 students. A wait list will start after 15 students.

No experience needed! Interested Sangha members please e-mail your name, phone number and the date of the Sunday(s) you are available to the temple at religiousdepartment@seattlebetsuin.com.

Service chairs are asked to arrive at the temple by 9:35AM for a quick consultation with the ministerial staff to determine who is doing what (a generic script is provided with blanks for you to fill in).

Rev. Dr. Kenji Akahoshi is leading a retreat this weekend titled “Practicing No Practice” at the beautiful Bastyr University Campus at 14500 Juanita Dr. NE, Kenmore, WA 98028. The retreat starts at 7pm Friday, September 23, and runs through 1pm Sunday, September 25. Registration is $200 and includes Saturday meals, Sunday breakfast and lunch and lodging (dorm room*). Discover, clarify and share our experience of Shin Buddhism. Introspection, discussion and insightful activities will bring alive the relevancy and depth of Shin “practice”. In a supportive and light-hearted
environment, we move from a conceptual understanding to a personal experience.

Dr. Akahoshi holds a Master’s degree in transpersonal psychology and has a background in wilderness vision quests and personal growth disciplines. He is affiliated with the San Jose Betsuin Church.

• Delicious vegetarian meals will be from Bastyr’s own cafeteria.

Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara will present a half day Japanese language seminar on Saturday, September 17th, 1:30P – 5PM, titled “Message from Shinran Shonin – His thoughts in the Shoshinge”. Rev. Kuwahara is a staff member of our mother temple, the Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto Japan, who is currently assigned to the Center for Buddhist Education (CBE) at the Jodo Shinshu Center in Berkeley, CA. There he serves as the coordinator for the CBE’s Jodo Shinshu Correspondence Course.

Reverend Koshin Ogui, Socho (Bishop) of the Buddhist Churches of America, was in Seattle this past week and delivered the Dharma talk during the temple’s annual Atomic Bomb Memorial Service on Sunday, August 7th.
